Activated alumina powder is an inorganic compound characterized by a high specific surface area and a porous structure, with aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) as its primary chemical component. It possesses excellent adsorption properties, catalytic activity, and chemical stability, making it widely used in industry, environmental protection, and chemical reactions.
I. Physical and Chemical Properties
Activated alumina powder appears as a white powder with uniform particles and a surface containing a large number of micropores. This porous structure gives it a very large specific surface area, providing abundant active sites capable of adsorbing water, gases, and organic compounds. II. Preparation Methods
There are typically two methods for preparing activated alumina powder:
Chemical Precipitation Method: A solution of aluminum salt is reacted with an alkaline solution to form aluminum hydroxide precipitate, which is then washed, dried, and calcined to produce activated alumina powder.
Sol-Gel Method: A sol is converted into a gel, followed by drying and high-temperature calcination, resulting in alumina powder with uniform particle size and controllable porosity.
During the preparation process, calcination temperature and duration significantly affect the specific surface area, pore size distribution, and activity of the activated alumina powder, requiring precise control.
III. Main Applications
Adsorbent: Activated alumina powder effectively adsorbs pollutants such as moisture, fluorides, and heavy metal ions from the air, making it widely used in air purification, water treatment, and industrial drying processes. For example, it can be used as a filter medium in dehumidifiers, gas drying towers, and water purifiers.
Catalysts and Catalyst Supports: Its high specific surface area and porosity enable activated alumina powder to serve as a catalyst or support in chemical reactions. For instance, in petroleum refining processes, activated alumina powder is used in hydrocracking, isomerization, and desulfurization reactions to enhance reaction rates and selectivity.
Pharmaceuticals and Daily Chemical Products: In the pharmaceutical field, activated alumina powder can serve as an adsorbent for neutralizing acidic substances or preparing desiccants. In toothpaste and cosmetics, it can also be used as a filler and polishing agent.
IV. Precautions
Although activated alumina powder has a wide range of applications, safety precautions must still be observed during use. The powder is easily inhaled; therefore, a mask should be worn or operations should be conducted in a well-ventilated area; Contact with flammable materials should be avoided during high-temperature processing; when used in water, excessive moisture absorption and caking must be prevented to avoid compromising performance.
Due to its excellent adsorption properties, catalytic activity, and chemical stability, activated alumina powder plays a vital role in industrial production, environmental remediation, and daily life. With advancements in materials science, its scope of application continues to expand, providing reliable support for energy conservation, environmental protection, and efficient production.
